I still remember the first time I watched ‘Before Sunrise’ at the tender age of 8 or 9. I already loved the movie when I was little; but when I rewatched it when I was older, I was absolutely mind-blown. The ‘Before’ trilogy – ‘Before Sunrise’, ‘Before Sunset’, and ‘Before Midnight’ – holds a special place in many people’s hearts. As such, hearing Ethan Hawke muse about a fourth movie has gotten us all soft and gooey inside.
The gap between each movie in the trilogy so far has been nine years and now that we are coming up on another nine years after ‘Before Midnight’ (that would be in 2022), the question has been begging to be asked: is there going to be a fourth one? In an interview with IndieWire, Ethan Hawke doesn’t say no. In fact, he imagines a fourth movie that follows Jesse and Celine during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
In a live-stream on Instagram, Ethan said, “If the first three were all nine years apart, the fourth would not follow that trajectory.” He also admits that he has been thinking about it with Director Richard Linklater. “The idea of revisiting it, I would have to believe we could make something as good,” he says. “We enjoy working together and being together, but we have to make sure we have something to say.”
He then imagines how Jesse and Celine would cope during the current pandemic. “Wouldn’t it be hysterical if the next movie was just them in isolation?” he asks. “If there’s one person to make the world laugh about what’s happening now, it’s Julie Delpy. I cant imagine what she would say about this.”
He adds, “Maybe this one should be set in Italy. Just go right into the fire and they are singing with all those people on their porches.”
