Here’s why we won’t be getting new emojis in 2021

Even emojis couldn’t escape the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Unicode Consortium, the group in charge of overseeing the release of emojis, has announced they are delaying the release of 2021 emojis for 6 months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mark Davis, President of the Consortium, said, “Under the current circumstances we’ve heard that our contributors have a lot on their plates at the moment and decided it was in the best interests of our volunteers and the organizations that depend on the standard to push out our release date.”

The Consortium relies heavily on the efforts of volunteers, and Davis says that “This year we simply can’t commit to the same schedule we’ve adhered to in the past.” With this, the deadline for submitting new emoji has also been pushed back, which means people can submit emoji ideas until September 1st.

But even if we aren’t getting new emojis next year, we can still look forward to the new ones that will be released this 2020.
