5 Reasons Why We Love Echosmith
When In Manila had a chance to have a one-on-one interview with Echosmith, an alternative indie pop band formed in 2009. Unbeknownst to many, the four piece never planned to be a band. Quoting Sydney, lead vocals and the only girl in the family, “It was a very natural thing for us even though we weren’t even planning on being a band. You’d think that would be the master plan, but we happen to pick the perfect instruments to become one. Like Noah is the typical bass player; our hands are too small anyways.”
With music influences ranging from The Killers and The Strokes to The Bravery, MTV was spot-on in naming Echosmith one of the artists to watch for in 2014. While we’re at it, here are 5 reasons why you would love Echosmith, too.

5. They have one hell of a clever name.
They’re name came from the word blacksmith, but instead of tempering steel, they forge the catchy hooks that have garnered recognition from MTV and their contemporaries; hence, the birth of Echosmith.Â
Did you know that they used to be called ‘Ready, Set, Go!’, though? Â Jamie, the lead guitarist and eldest child, pointed out that they decided to change their name as a testament to their musical and personal evolution.

“Ten and seventeen (age-wise) are way different people,” says Sydney, later adding, “We were different people when we were Ready, Set, Go! and you know, when we were really discovering who we were, we started to really become Echosmith. And we were like, “Oh hey! It’s time for a name change!”‘
Either way, no matter what their band name is; the youthful energy of their songs and critical acclaim early in their career speak for themselves.

With Cool Kids making its way to the Top 100 charts, we can’t help but bob our heads to its carefree vibe and feel good rhythm. With the song currently making rounds on the radio and various hit charts, these kids are making it clear that they’re just getting started. Â

The moment we entered the room, Echosmith was all smiles. The interview felt like a reunion of old friends. Talking about the heavy traffic in Metro Manila, Sydney even opened up about getting her license and how she can never drive around New York, let alone in Manila.

Having been introduced to music at such an early age, they perform with the confidence and showmanship of seasoned pros, even though they’re barely old enough to buy liquor or go to jail. With the looks, energy and the talent to boot, who wouldn’t want to give them a second look or maybe a third or a fourth or a… well, you catch my drift. Their music is an amalgamation of their individuality.
As quoted from Jamie, “It’s all four of us (in terms of who comes up with the music). We all write together. It’s very collaborative, pretty much like a democracy as far as writing goes. We all do it together and kind of like share roles.”
