Card-based payment system will soon be used on e-jeepneys in the Philippines

Currently, there are 23 air-conditioned and electronic jeepneys (e-jeepneys) that are operating on the Novaliches-Malinta (Valenzuela City) route according to the Novaliches-Malinta Jeepney Transport Service Cooperative (NMJTSC). These are just the first batch out of the 124 Hino Euro 4-compliant vehicles that have been allocated under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP). Another batch is on its way as 29 more units are said to be delivered this month or early next year.

In line with this, the NMJTSC have also started training their passenger assistant officers to prepare for the forthcoming use of the card-based payment system on e-jeepneys. The said system is already being used on LRT and MRT Lines, and Point-to-Point bus services in the Philippines.

The minimum fare in PUJs is Php 9 while it is Php 11 in the air-conditioned jeepneys. Of course, the 20% fare discount still applies to senior citizens, students and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
