Travel and those special moments in our lives are memories that are fun to return to again and again. Getting to see them from a different point in your life, thus a different perspective, makes looking back so much more meaningful. I got to see that and many other possibilities with what DJI‘s latest drone technology can do.

DJI launched Spark, a hand held drone that can also be controlled with hand gestures. It can lift off from the palm of your hand to capture and share the special moments in your life on the go. As you can see, it’s just about the size of your phone, and slightly lighter than a can of soda, weighing at 10.6 ounces (300 grams). (Beside the DJI Spark in the photo is an Oppo F1s for size comparison)

It’s really easy to use. You turn it on by double pressing the power button, letting the camera capture your face. Once its propellers are running and the lights turn green then blink red, you can let it go and use hand gestures like what I did here below to control its position and shoot photos.

Likewise, getting it to go back to you is easy. You just raise your hands to make a Y shape, and it’ll come back. Or you can let it land on your palm. How? Check this out:

DJI added a little extra to make the shooting and flying experience easier with Spark. The QuickShot Intelligent Flight Mode makes creating professional videos fun and easy. Select a QuickShot, and Spark will fly along a preset flight path while recording a short video and tracking a subject along the way.

The are four presets to choose from:

  • Rocket, sending Spark straight up into the air with the camera pointed down
  • Dronie, flying up and away from your subject
  • Circle, rotating around the subject
  • Helix, spiraling away from a subject as it flies upward.

As with usual DJI Products, you get amazing specs with this drone. It runs on a 2 gimbal axis, dramatically reducing shake and rolling shutter effect to get effortless cinematic shots. The camera is a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor that can capture photos of up to 12 megapixels and stabilized HD 1080p videos under normal flight mode. It has a maximum flight time of up to 16 minutes, with its high-energy density LiPo battery.

Along with the remote control accessory, Spark allows for 720p real-time video transmission from up to 1.2 miles (2 km) away. Also, with said remote, this baby can go up to speeds of 31 mph (50 kph) in Sport mode. The Sport Mode sets the gimbal to first-person view (FPV) by default, so the camera moves along with you as you fly. This, added with the DJI Goggles, gives operators an immersive FPV flight experience. Think flying a jet in first person view. And creating those elaborate twists and turns. Exciting, right?

I feel though that the best part of the DJI Spark is the Flight Autonomy system. It is what lets Spark sense obstacles from up to 16 ft (5 m) away and hover accurately, with vision system assistance at up to 98 feet (30 meters). It consists of the main camera, a downward-facing vision system, a forward-facing 3D Sensing System, dual-band GPS and GLONASS, a high-precision inertial measurement unit, and 24 powerful computing cores to make it all possible.

Another great thing is that it is available in an array of colors, from Sky Blue, Meadow Green, Lava Red, Sunrise Yellow and Alpine White. I am in love with the Sky Blue and Lava Red as they’re my favorite colors. It kind of sets you apart from the rest with the bright colors they offer.

Seize the moment and grab your Spark for the price of 30,000 Php. This comes with an aircraft, a battery, a USB charger and three pairs of propellers. It is recommended though to use the propeller guard for safety purposes. Or you can grab the Spark Fly More Combo which includes an aircraft, two batteries, four pairs of propellers, a remote controller, propeller guards, a charging hub, a shoulder bag, and all necessary cables, with a retail price of PHP 42,700.
