Following in the footsteps of Lea Salonga, who had cemented her place in history for lending her singing voice to the song “Reflection” in beloved Disney film Mulan, is singer-songwriter Moira Dela Torre who has created a fresh, new take to the iconic song!
Disney Philippines collaborated with Moira, the country’s most-streamed artist, on a localized version of “Reflection” that will touch the hearts of Pinoy fans everywhere.
When asked how she felt after she was tapped to create her own rendition of the song, Moira said, “I became very emotional, because ‘Reflection’ is very special to me. It’s the first-ever song I performed in public, and also the first full song that I learned on my own. It basically launched my love for music.”
She also revealed how “Reflection” meant to her, having battled (and still battling) her anxieties and fears of being herself and performing onstage. “It’s funny how it speaks about self-doubt and questioning who you see on the mirror every day. That’s basically me, but every time I feel that happening now, I feel braver. This song came back at a perfect time in my life, and I could only be happy and grateful.”
She then shared the lyric that resonated with her the most: “Why must we all conceal, how we think, how we feel?”
“This millennial generation makes us walk on eggshells,” she explains. “It’s so hard to be true to yourself, and that’s really something that we should fight for. I know what my advocacy is, and that’s on mental health, on hope, on perseverance, on love, on kindness, and family. Even talking about those things that are super essential to everyone is such a hard thing. That’s why I really love this song, no joke. I wish I wrote it.”
Moira’s cover will be released soon. Mulan will premiere in local theaters on March 25.
