DilimRun: A Costume Fun Run for the Books

When in Manila and craving for exciting and healthy outdoor activities, try joining events like the recently concluded DilimRun.

DilimRun is a costume fun run around the UP Diliman campus—which was full of ‘scarers’ for the evening. However, what made it unique was that even the runners were encouraged to come in costumes. Some were dressed up as scary white ladies, while others were dressed up as their favorite movie characters. The event was like a Halloween party, a fun run, and a horror booth as big as the Diliman campus!

Among the scarers I encountered while running were a manananggal, ghosts, zombies, hanging bodies, a dead couple dancing, a bloodied grandmother in a rocking chair, and a corpse popping out from a coffin!

Since I got to the venue early, I saw the makeup and costume being put on the scarers. I expected I wouldn’t be scared during the run itself, but I was wrong. I still kept on screaming and calling the guard while I ran towards the finish line. Being scared made me run so much faster—although that wasn’t enough to make me win the race.

Another thing I noticed prior to the race itself was how much the organizers prepared for the security of the runners. There was a fire truck, an ambulance, and security personnel all lined up by the Registration Booth! For a newbie runner like me, that was really comforting!

Aside from the run itself, there were so many other things to enjoy. There was free food, free drinks, and free photobooth. There was also a booth that offered free face paint.

It was a unique bonding experience for us. My friends and I thought it was a good change from the usual going-to-the-mall routine during weekends.

I wish I thought of a more creative costume because the winner of Best Costume got to take home a High Sierra bag! There were also ten winners of the raffle draw who got P 1,000 worth of Gift Certificates from Burlington. Aside from the Best in Costume Award, the first three runners to cross the finish line were also awarded with Gift Certificates, medals, and a High Sierra bag for the champion.

After the event, a lot of us stayed behind to have photos taken with the scarers and to enjoy more of the freebies.

I hope the organizers would come up with another even like this in the future! This was my first fun run, and it will not be the last. Next time, when in Manila, do try out unique outdoor activities you won’t forget.

DilimRun was presented by the UP Chinese Student Association together with 99.5 Play FM, WhenInManila.com, iRemit Inc., and High Sierra, in cooperation with DZUP 1602, ClickTheCity.com, Burlington, Creative Bakers Company, Inc., La Claire Spa, and also made possible by Mellow 94.7, ChinoyTV, Temps and Staffers, CNT Worldwide Transport, Inc., Summit Water, Magnolia Purewater, and supported by Ateneo Celadon, De LaSalle Englicom, International Club of UP, UP Lex Adspirantes, UP Red Cross Youth and UP Rifle Pistol Team. The organizers would also like to thank the La Naval Fire Volunteers and the San Juan Red Cross Chapter.
