The Department of Education (Deped) announced its integration of digital literacy into the basic education curriculum. This means K-12 students will now be learning about digital citizenship and online responsibility. It will be done through telecommunications company Globe’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP).

The DTP has 2 main objectives, namely educating students on the proper behavior to conduct when using the internet and creating an open, safe, and inclusive online environment. It aims to achieve this by explaining how the online world operates, illustrating responsible actions on the internet, and focusing on positively maximizing the internet’s use.
It will be divided into 4 parts: Digital Insight, to train students in discerning proper online behavior and securing their information; Digital Impact, to weigh the impact of technology on a student’s social life; Digital Ambition, to instill skills in maximizing technology; and Digital Discernment, to show students how to differentiate between reliable sources of information from unreliable ones.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones explained that “we are in a connected world where anyone can easily have access to the internet.”
“While we believe that the internet is fundamental to achieving inclusive and equitable quality education, we are also aware that it exposes our youth to many potential risks that may harm them,” said Briones.
