Director Theresa Mundita Lim of the DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau, is set to lead the advisory body of the UN biodiversity agency, heading the Subsidiary Body on Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTTA).

Lim, who was appointed during the COP13 in Cancun, Mexico last December, will be serving a 2-year term and will be succeeding Andrew Bignell of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation.

One of Lim’s main duties is to prepare a set of recommendations for the next COP14 to be held in Egypt in 2018.

DENR Secretary Gina Lopez, who endorsed Lim to the position, shared that the latter’s appointment to the CBD would “allow the Philippines to show how its biodiversity programs can benefit humanity.”

Lopez added:

“Biodiversity is the wealth of the planet. If we keep it alive, our planet will see the light of day. In the Philippines, our aim is to explore biodiversity in a way that benefits the surrounding communities.”
