Delivering Local-level Resilience through Adaptation and Mitigation in Agri-Fisheries: A Roving Workshop

WIM poster

Mayors, Municipal Agriculturists and Project Staff from the 17 regions included in the Department of Agriculture’s Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA) project are set to attend the roving workshop in Guinayangan, Quezon on October 16 – 18, 2017.  This is to assist in enabling them in establishing their own climate-smart villages (CSVs).  These would also be known as AMIA villages.

The workshop aims to give the participants a firsthand look at how climate-resilient agriculture (CRA) and CSVs are being implemented and established at the grassroots level.  Specifically, the CRA tools/approaches to be showcased are participatory action research (PAR), participatory varietal selection (PVS), green leaf manure (GLM) testing and upland farming systems.

Speakers and facilitators include Use. Joel Rudinas (DA-AMIA). Dr. Saturnina Halos (DA-AMIA), Ms. Emily Monville-Oro (International Institute of Rural Reconstruction or IIRR) and Mr. Rene Vidallo (IIRR), aside from other IIRR officers and staff, and that from the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMA) of Guinayangan, Quezon.

CSVs need to be established now as climate change has already affected agricultural production and consequently, food security.  CRA practices also need to be promoted as these approaches have been proven effective in mitigating the effects of climate change among one of the most vulnerable segments of society – the small-holder farmers.  This workshop is a necessary step towards this goal.
