As a way of encouraging more artists to become a part of what is expected to become the biggest cultural event to be held in Boracay, Crimson Resort and Spa Boracay is extending the deadline for submissions for its 50 Shades of Blue exhibition to April 30, 2022.
Slated for June 2022, 50 Shades of Blue is a creative endeavor geared towards presenting the best works of a new generation of artists, featuring pieces from local and émigré painters, sculptors, and mixed media specialists.
While Crimson is offering a cash prize for the best professional and amateur artworks in the collection, the event will also serve as an opportunity for artists to gain exposure to a wider possible audience, seeing how their work will be featured in all media related to the exhibition.
The event also gives artists the chance to meet and interact with critics and collectors seeking fresh talents to feature in future exhibitions in galleries both here and overseas.
Judging by a Panel of Creative Experts
A select panel of judges will choose the 50 best artworks from all the submissions received, hence the title of the exhibition. These will be on display at key locations within the resort for the entire month of June. Selected pieces will also be available for purchase by interested collectors and art aficionados.
From this master list of 50 submissions, the judges will also select two winners: one for the best professional artwork and one for the best amateur artwork.
The judging panel for the exhibition includes current Crimson Artist-in-residence Eric Egualada, renowned painter/sculptor Nemesio “Nemi / Nemiranda” Miranda Jr., realist painter Juno Galang, and figurative master August Santiago.
A native of Angono, Rizal, Egualada has been painting for over 35 years and is an educator, as well as an artist, having trained with the Department of Education (DepEd,) the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP,) and the special arts program of the Dalubhasaan sa Edukasyon, Sining, at Kultura (DESK.) He refers to his style as Neo-Art which combines elements of cubism and figurative realism. Egualada’s work was featured in Pamana, an exhibition that showcased the work of contemporary Angono artists, at Makati’s Prism Gallery back in March 2018.
Nemiranda is best known for his work which has championed the indomitability of the Filipino spirit. His most notable works include his breathtaking murals at the EDSA Shrine in Mandaluyong, the History of the Philippine Army mural in Quezon City, as well as his astounding 20-sculpture markers depicting the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary dotting the pilgrimage route from the EDSA Shrine to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage in Antipolo, Rizal. He founded the Angono Ateliers Association in 1975 and continues to champion Filipino artists through numerous cultural events as well as his own Nemiranda ArtHouse and Museum in Rizal.
Currently based in Parañaque, artist Juno Galang migrated to the United States in the 1960s where he worked as freelance artist in several states before settling down in Honolulu, HI to paint full-time. He returned to his home country after an illustrious 22-year career overseas, setting up shop in the south of Manila where his work features elements from Impressionist masters like Van Gogh and Gaugain, as well as the work of Picasso, the Father of Cubism.
Presently affiliated with Angono Ateliers and the Art Association of Malabon, visual artist August Santiago is an alumnus of the University of Santo Tomas and has been an active contributor to the International Cultural Exchanges program between Canada and several Southeast Asian nations. He has received Malabon City’s Modern Impressionist Artist Gold Award for his work in promoting Philippine art and culture.
These creative experts are dedicated to choosing the 50 best submissions that would best show the nascent talents of a new generation of Filipino artists who are ready to take on the art world – both here at home and on a global level.
