As Speaker of the House Martin Romualdez and Presidential Son Vinnie Marcos helped with the ceremonial breaking of the ground, a look of fulfillment was noticed on the face of hometown hero Congressman Bingo Matugas.
The Matugas family — led by former Governor Lalo Matugas and son Bingo — had been lobbying for a fully equipped, completely staffed Level 2 hospital in Siargao for years. Today, their wish was granted. After a 380-million peso injection from the national government, the rise of the long-awaited Siargao Island Medical Center (SIMC) had finally commenced.
Visibly excited and grateful for the new Siargao hospital facility were the hundreds of officials, residents and tourists that gathered to watch the event. Within less than a decade, the island built its reputation from global unknown into what Time Magazine refers to as “one of the greatest places in the world”. But one of the common criticisms of Siargao has always been the absence of a modernized hospital, in that when anyone was badly ill or injured, he or she would have to be transported elsewhere to get the proper treatment.
Lovers of the now world-famous island need not worry about that anymore as the Siargao Island Medical Center SIMC is set to house a minimum of 100 beds with dozens of doctors, consultating specialists and staff, along with all the required modern-day medical equipment — a first for Siargao.
“This is milestone and a legacy project for all Surigaonons,” said Congressman Matugas. “This is an ultimate expression of love for the well-being of the Siargaonons and those who love Siargao!”
