Another beloved establishment is closing its doors.
Cinema ’76 Film Society, a microcinema founded by TBA Studios that is dedicated to making local independent films more accessible to the Filipino market, is saying goodbye to its pioneer San Juan branch this week. Cinema ’76 announced the unfortunate news last Friday, September 10, on a Facebook post.
“Cinema ’76 Film Society San Juan is officially closing its doors on September 15, 2021. Our first micro-cinema branch, which opened in 2016, became a haven for filmmakers, producers, and film fans looking for a home,” they began.
“Our hearts may be heavy, but we know that this is not goodbye. We believe in the resilience of creatives in the industry. We believe in the passion of Filipino movie fans. Magkakasama-sama rin tayo ulit sa loob ng sinehan (We will see each other again in theaters someday).”
Cinema ’76’s Anonas, Quezon City branch remains open where it opened its Cinema ’76 Cafe last June.

Amid COVID-19 restrictions, cinemas all over the country have remained closed for nearly two years and filmmakers have since switched to online platforms to release new movies and shows.
