Earlier today, Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi posed as Darna at the 71st Miss Universe National Costume Competition. Filipino fans were surprised as the beauty queen introduced our very own superheroine at the international pageant’s preliminary round.
According to the organization, Cortesi wore Mars Ravelo’s creation as her national costume because it embodies “a cultural icon that symbolizes kindness, empathy, and empowerment.” Designed by Oliver Tolentino with accessories by Jerome Navarro, here are some snaps from the Miss Universe Philippines’ official Facebook Page!
The Ravelo Family even expressed its support and gratitude to the Philippine bet through a statement. “We are proud of Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi for championing Darna on the world stage through the 71st Miss Universe national costume competition,” it read. “The Ravelo family extends their full support, gratitude, and excitement for the opportunity to show Darna to a global audience through our country’s official Miss Universe representative.”
They also hoped that Darna continues to inspire and empower women. “We hope that, like our beloved Filipino superheroine, Celeste will continue to serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for women all around the world,” the statement concluded.
Mars Ravelo’s “Darna” is an ongoing TV series in the Philippines starring Jane De Leon, Joshua Garcia, and Janella Salvador.
The 71st Miss Universe Competition or Miss Universe 2022 will be held on January 14th, 2023 (January 15, 8 a.m. in PH time) in New Orleans, USA. It will be hosted by Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo and Emmy award-winning producer/host Jeannie Mai Jenkins.
