These Calamansi Muffins Will Remind You of Summer in Boracay

Pre-COVID19, I used to go to Boracay whenever I needed a break from the busy city life. One of the things that my friends here in Manila always asked for when it came to pasalubong was a box of the beach’s famous calamansi muffins. I haven’t been to Boracay in a few months now, but I am happy to announce that I have found delicious calamansi muffins that could rival the ones that you find on the island. I found them at Cucina ni Sheng.

Cucina ni Sheng is an online dessert shop that bakes every weekend. Their humble kusina offerings are simple, but very delicious and affordable!

Their calamansi muffins are my personal favorites because they take me back to the beauty of summer in Boracay. In fact, if I’ve being completely honest, I liked these muffins even better. You’ll have to taste them for yourself to see if you’ll agree.

The owner, Sheila Magcalas, worked in advertising and marketing for a decade. After being forced to resign from work due to pregnancy difficulties and trouble finding a trustworthy caretaker, she is now a stay-at-home mom who watches over her two kids. Sheila shares that it was hard for her to leave her career. “I felt bad for not being a self-sufficient woman and not generating income for our household,” she admits.

The pandemic made her even more anxious and whilst looking for a distraction, Sheila started to bake and try out different recipes. After three months of trial and error, she decided to start selling products in order to raise funds for her 3-year-old’s upcoming home school enrollment. For Sheila, the pandemic proved to be a good opportunity because everyone is currently glued to their devices browsing on social media.

Cucina ni Sheng launched on June 1, 2020. Sheila admits that she was worried no one would order at first, but she was pleasantly surprised to be wrong. Every weekend, her friends and family ordered some of her sweet treats – and there really is no wonder why. You can feel all of the love and care that Sheila pours into her offerings. She wakes up at 3AM to make sure all of the batter and dough is ready before waking up her kids, and then puts everything in the oven when they wake up. She also does pre-work every Friday and sanitizes all of the packaging that she uses.

Aside from crinkles, fudgy brownies, momster cookies, and the calamansi muffins mentioned above; here are other noteworthy items on her menu:
