Filipino Taste Test Americans Try Jollibee

Three months ago, the popular pop culture website Buzzfeed asked Americans to try Jollibee for the first time. For some reason, the reception wasn’t so good for the world’s most popular Filipino fastfood restaurant.

One of the guys called the Big Bite (a spam sandwich not available in the Philippines) a sandwich made by a divorced dad. One guy even asked, “what kind of place is this? Why are we eating this?”

But it’s good news that they loved the Chickenjoy, because of course, everyone loves Jollibee’s Chickenjoy.

Last month, they also tried Filipino street food, and the response wasn’t so good either. They tried common Filipino street food like isaw, kwek kwek, turon, and kikiam. They liked the fish balls and turon, but everything changed when they were faced with the isaw. One girl observed, “poop travels here.” We were about to shout “Pinoy Pride!” when we realized…. she’s right.

This time, Buzzfeed is back to try Filipino snacks and guess what? Everyone loved it! They tried classic favorites like Haw Haw Flakes, Hansel mocha sandwich, Kirei shrimp-flavored chips, and Mik-Mik chocolate powder.

All the respondents were curious about how to pronounce Haw Haw, with one guy commenting it’s the sound a cow makes. One girl was right when she said that when Filipinos like something so much, they say it twice. Hello, Tito Junjun!

One girl compared Hansel to pancakes, while a guy compared it to coffee. One girl wisely combined the two and said it tasted like coffee pancakes! Her friend later dubbed it as the ‘Philippine Oreo.’

One guy said of Kirei, “Look at that little shrimp. He’s flexing!”

Everyone loved Kirei, and it reminded a Chinese girl of the shrimp chips she ate as a kid. Another said it tastes better than it smells. One guy declared what all Filipinos think of Kirei: “These are really good. These are really… yummy.”

The Americans trying Mik-Mik was the highlight of the video because they were trying to figure out how it works. One girl asked if she should mix it in water, while another said, “It tastes like you just need to add hot water!” And yes, like most Mik-Mik beginners, most of them choked while sucking up the powder. But they later realized the taste was worth the hassle.

It’s great that Americans loved the Filipino snacks, because they are actually good! What’s your favorite Filipino snack? Mention it in the comments below!
