BSP Launches Limited Edition Miguel Malvar Commemorative Coin

The film Heneral Luna helped reignite interest in Philippine history. While you’re rereading your notes and books on the topic, you might want to check this out: the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) launched a limited edition Miguel Malvar commemorative coin.

General Miguel Malvar is known as the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans during the revolution. When Emilio Aguinaldo and the rest of the generals were captured by enemy forces, Malvar took full command of Filipino forces.

The P10 coin started becoming available early this week and features an engraving of the Philippine hero in time for his 150th birth anniversary. There will be 10 million pieces of the coin.

In the past, BSP has released commemorative coins to celebrate the 150th year of National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal in 2011, the 150th year Andres Bonifacio in 2013, the 150th year of Philippine Hero Apolinario Mabini, the 70th Anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landing and the Bagong Bayani commemorative coins in honor of overseas Filipinos in 2014, and the state/pastoral visit of Pope Francis in 2015.
