Manila-based Filipino sculptor and freelance photographer, Jimmy Bautista Jr., also known as “Wuji Zun Jr.” and “WUJI Toys,” is selling a limited edition version of his signature toy, the Wickey, dressed in a Barong Tagalog this weekend at Toycon PH 2023—and only 20 people worldwide can get their hands on it!
“Wuji” began as a Gundam scale modeler in 2010 before moving on to customizing Funko Pops in 2016. However, it wasn’t until March 2020 that he released his first Wickey in three colorways.
“The inspiration for Wickey came from my favorite cartoon characters, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mickey Mouse, who have stood as my childhood friends since I was 7,” shared “Wuji” in an exclusive interview with WhenInManila.
He describes the Wickey as “a complex representation of my perspective as an artist.”
He adds: “An amalgam of “Wicked” and “Mouse,” Wickey is an anthropomorphic mouse born with the ability to run faster than the speed of sound, with lightning-fast reflexes to match. Its mask symbolizes fear, and its eyes are the combined visage of reality and fiction. The inconspicuous personality embodied by its gray-scaled clothing contrasts with its ears, representing great enthusiasm.”
He created a version of the Wickey wearing a Barong Tagalog to commemorate Philippine Independence Day and promote the country’s culture and tourist spots.
“I want to tell the world that technology is already part of our lives and keeps advancing daily. They are here to help people make things faster. Still, nothing can beat human hands when it comes to handicrafts, details, and perfection,” he shared regarding the process of handcrafting this collectible.
“[What keeps me going are] the people who continuously support me and customize my toys, as I designed them to be a platform for everyone to show their creativity and reach more people from different cultures and facets.”
The Barong Tagalog Wickey will be available for purchase for PHP 7,600 or USD 145 (shipping fee not included) at his booth at Toycon PH 2023 from July 7-9 at the SMX Convention Center together with his friends Getsa Figures, Studio Shido, MikoSwabe, Badz Sculptures, Blushing Owl Studio, and Freely Abrigo who will also be showcasing their toys at the Toy Designer Alley 2 section.
