The smell of freshly baked goods has a way of bringing about a feeling of comfort and nostalgia. After all, who doesn’t love receiving homemade baked treats?

Studies show that baking at home can help relieve stress, and is a great form of creative expression. Yet the idea of combining ingredients and using an oven can be daunting.

If the thought of baking intimidates you, it’s time to dust that flour off your face, put on your apron, and learn from some talented chefs and home bakers.

The Glass Bar at Crescent Moon, in partnership with WhenInManila.com, brings you two workshops that will help you gain the confidence and know-how to not only whip up your own baked treats, but also decorate them with beautiful buttercream frosting designs. The Baking 101 and Buttercream Frosting workshops will take place from May 5 to 6 at Crescent Moon Cafe in Antipolo.

Baking 101 with Krystle Paz

May 5 (Saturday), 2 to 5 p.m.

Learn the basics of baking cookies, cupcakes, and savory and sweet pies from scratch. This workshop will also equip you with the knowledge and skills to take on other baking projects. You don’t even need a professional or industrial oven! This workshop will show you how to bake using different kinds of ovens, including smaller, portable ones.

Baking 101 will be taught by Krystle Paz, a chef at Crescent Moon Cafe. Chef Krystle has worked in the kitchens of Mandarin Oriental, Century Park Hotel, and the Raintree Group of Restaurants, and she considers baking to be her first love. She holds a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management from the College of St. Benilde, and has taught numerous cooking workshops around Antipolo.

Buttercream Frosting with Veron Nunez

May 6 (Sunday), 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

After popping out some wonderful baked goods from the oven on the first day, learn to whip up your own frosting and pipe up some buttercream-frosted goodies. This workshop will teach you how to properly frost and assemble a cake and how to use buttercream frosting as a medium to create beautifully piped flowers. You can make your own icing flowers, leaves, and buds.

The Buttercream Frosting workshop will be taught by Veron Nunez. A teacher by profession, Veron is a self-taught cake maker who has tirelessly honed her baking and design skills through numerous workshops here and abroad. She recently received certification from a Korean buttercream master and has held workshops and on-camera demonstrations.

Whether as an expression of creativity, a means to save money, or a way to control the ingredients you use, leading to a healthier diet, we have a sweet treat for you!
