Anthony Mackie Talks About Becoming Captain America

Avengers: Endgame put the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a stand-still. With no post-credit scene and Spider-Man: Far From Home closing off Phase 3, anything could happen in the future of the franchise. However, the blockbuster hit did lay down some new foundations for Phase 4 to stand on, one of which is Steve Rogers passing the mantle of Captain America to Sam Wilson aka the Falcon.

The moment is considered to be iconic for many MCU fans, but it hasn’t been discussed at length by anyone from Marvel Studios until now.

At a Celebrity Fan Fest panel, the Falcon himself, Anthony Mackie, talked about taking on the shield and being entrusted the responsibility of handling the big role. Apparently, it wasn’t the producers at Marvel Studios who told him that he was going to be the new Captain America. Chris Evans himself broke the news to the actor just like in the movie.

“I love Chris. Chris is an amazing Cap. And I feel like, what he’s been able to do with that character, very few people have been able to do in any cinematic universe or span of films. Because he’s played Cap for a lot of movies. To take that over, to be a part of that, the legacy of that, is a huge challenge. It’s something where a lot of people are going to expect me to be Chris Evans in the same suit, but a black dude. And that’s definitely not going to happen,” Mackie further said during his panel.

A lot of changes are happening in the MCU and we’re excited to see all of them. There’s a strong chance that we’re going to see Sam’s Captain America when he returns for Disney+’s mini-series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He will reunite with Sebastian Stan who plays Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier. The production of the series was originally set to start in October 2019 but has been moved earlier to August. The show is set to premiere in August 2020.
