Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. It was written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later).

The movie follows a biologist searching for her husband. She goes on an expedition with a secret agency and discovers a bizarre world called Area X, where the laws of reality seem to have changed and nature has taken on a strange new turn. The trailer teases us with bizarre images and hints of a dangerous creature (or creatures?) lurking in the wilderness.
I have read the trilogy and I have found it to be among the strangest books I have ever read. In every page is an oppressive fear, a paranoia of the unknown reality that is taking over the universe. There are questions more than answers. Can the movie translate this incredible mind-bending experience? I can’t wait to find out.
