“Always Be Hopeful”: Vico Sotto Gives Advice to Young Filipinos Who Want to be Effective Leaders

Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto gave some words of advice to young Filipinos who want to be effective leaders. This happened recently at a webinar titled “From Principle to Policy: The New Wave of Youth Leadership” hosted by youth-led global network Project Insight. Other panelists present were Congresswoman Sarah Elago, SK Chairman Lesther Pangilinan, and Sociologist and University of the Philippines Instructor Athena Presto.

The webinar tackled various topics about effective youth leadership like common experiences faced by young leaders, and how leaders turn their principles and promises into policies and action.

One topic that was discussed during the webinar is how social media and technology affect politicians and their leadership. With this, the panelists said that technology both had its pros and cons. For example, with technology, they are able to reach more people and get their opinions on certain policies. However, they also noted that people should be careful about social media, especially with fake news that can be used to target politicians who perform their duties well.

According to Professor Presto, the challenge with social media is how to harness it in order for it to be used in a positive light. She added that social media is a neutral platform that can be used by anyone, and therefore, it can always be used either for good or bad intentions.

Another topic that was discussed was good governance among the youth. With this, Mayor Sotto gave some advice to youths who want to be effective and empathetic leaders. He said, “At times it may feel hopeless. As human beings, we tend to focus on the problems rather than the positive. But if we look around us and we look at the young leaders who are the future of our nation, then definitely we will not lose hope.”

He added, “As we get older and as we see younger generations who are even better than us, then we’ll definitely see our country moving forward in the right direction. […] Don’t lose hope, always be hopeful. But at the same time, let’s keep preparing ourselves.”
