Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was released in 1994 but it continues to break records and reach milestones today.

Just recently, the holiday classic hit one billion streams on Spotify.

Carey announced the news on Instagram with a photo of herself holding a plaque from the streaming platform. She said, “Thank you @spotify, the #lambily, and everyone who streams this song to add a little bit of festivity to the season! I truly appreciate each and every one of these 1 billion streams!”

That’s not the only milestone the song has received this year.

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the third straight year, making it the first song to lead in three distinct chart runs in the Hot 100.

Breaking records

On top of that, Billboard ranked the song #1 on their list of the Greatest of All Time Holiday 100 Songs.

In 2019, the Carey hit also broke three Guinness World Records: it received the records for highest-charting holiday (Christmas/New Year) song on the Hot 100 by a solo artist, the most streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours (with over 10.8 million streams last December), and most weeks in the UK singles Top 10 chart for a Christmas song.

The same year, Carey released an updated music video. Carey wore a Santa Claus-inspired outfit and serenaded a young girl who is magically transported into a winter wonderland where toys have come to life.

Today, it is recognized as the all-time best-selling Christmas single by a female artist.

The song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was first released in 1994 as the lead single to Carey’s first holiday album, Merry Christmas. Since then, it has been played all over the world, with the New Yorker calling it “one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon.” As of 2017, Carey has earned $60 million just through royalties.
