When in Manila, it isn’t uncommon for people to be super proud of the country whenever something awesome happens. However, when something bad happens, it isn’t uncommon for people to unjustly put other people down for it, either. Remember that time when Justin Bieber Instagrammed memes of Manny Pacquiao on the floor?

Remember the hate that ensued after this?

Well, it wasn’t any different after the UAAP Finals 76, when La Salle “took the crown”. While this could have been easily attributed to the greatness of the La Salle players, sheer luck, or the fatigue that was clearly evident from both teams at the time; the Internet decided to blame Aljon Mariano.

Yes, Aljon Mariano missed a potentially winning shot (keyword being ‘potentially’) and threw the ball away (unintentionally, of course) in an important possession, but the question is: was it really his fault?

Regardless of what your stance is on it, Aljon Mariano was clearly affected by the whole thing as he changed his Twitter profile picture to a black image after the game and stopped tweeting altogether.

Last night, however, he finally decided to break the silence with this:

We fell short but im still grateful coz it’s still a great journey, ang daming pinagdaanan hung team namin pero di kami sumuko, buo man kami o ndi lumaban kami sa bawat practice at laro. May time na things were not going our way talaga, nag 3 game losing streak kami pero nag regroup kami bumangon kami from no.6 dumaan kami sa butas ng karayom para umabot sa finals ayun nga lang di namin nakuha ang championship. Am so proud of our team still! God bless you all. 🙂

Buong season up and down. Ndi ako nakapag deliver at may mga desisyon ako that cost us the championship. Ganun naman yun. We have to take risks at doon tayo matututo at titibay. Move on! Learn from it and bounce back sabi nga nila. Di pa naman tapos ang lahat. Basta, I am and will always be proud that im a Thomasian! Buong puso! Kita kits next year. ONE FOR UST! 😉

And that, dear readers, is how you deal with haters When in Manila: with class. Kudos to you, Aljon Mariano!
