It’s time to say goodbye to the iconic landmark that greets you upon your arrival to Akihabara, Tokyo.
One of the district’s most beloved video games arcade, the SEGA Building 2 Arcade, will be permanently shutting its doors by August 30, 2020.

This last-minute notice shocked many locals who only found out through a sign posted inside the building. According to online translations, it read: “Notice of closure. Thank you for your continued patronage. We are sorry to announce that this branch, Sega Akihabara Building 2, will be closing. Our last day of operations will be Sunday, August 30. The entire staff wishes to express, from the bottom of our hearts, our sincere gratitude at the loving support you have given our establishment for so many years.”
The news then spread quickly on social media.

The arcade first opened in October 2003 under the name “Akihabara Kigo” and has grown to be a popular gaming and hangout spot since then. The huge building also became a billboard of sorts—a prime location to promote the latest video game release or anime tie-up.
SEGA has yet to explain the reason behind the unfortunate closure, but it’s no question that the current COVID-19 pandemic and the sharp decline in tourists were a major cause.
