Gat. Jose Rizal once said, “ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan, ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan”, a reminder that each of us should always look back at our humble beginnings and remember that for once, our journey started with simple stomps of our feet.

While Philippines has myriad kinds of plays, films and songs, folk dances were the archetypal entertainment of the good old days. In school we were taught that folk dances were not only danced by our ancestors just for entertainment but also for thanksgiving and rituals. We had a dalliance with Tinikling and Pandanggo sa Ilaw in elementary but later on forgot about them. We may read about them on history textbooks because they’re part of our culture but folk dances are birthmarks of our archipelago just like how Renaissance is to Italy. They are beautiful scars for the other countries to witness.

Enter 21st Century Folk Dance, a competition between the first and second year students of the Advertising and Public Relations of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Manila. Its main objective is to highlight the art of folk dancing and combine it with the poppin’ and lockin’ and twerkin’ and other contemporary styles famous with the generation today. This competition aims to keep the Filipino spirit and culture alive and produce camaraderie among the students. and this will definitely show that dancing is really more fun in the Philippines.

Witness the competition at Tiendesitas Activity Center, Pasig City on February 27, 2014 and see that dancing is really more fun in the Philippines!
