Symposium on Instituting School-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Leadership in Quezon City

School administrators from different parts of Quezon City will gather in a forum entitled “Symposium on Instituting School-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Leadership in Quezon City” at the QCX-Quezon City Interactive, Social History Museum, Quezon City Memorial Circle, Diliman, Quezon City, on  March 1, 2018.

This event aims to let the participants share their experiences regarding disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) in schools and learn from their peers.  They will likewise get to discover the best practices of schools that have incorporated DRRM into their programs early on.  Experts will likewise share new information about the “Big One” earthquake and updates on DRRM policies.

Speakers and facilitators include Isaac Bekalo, Ph.D. and Wilson Barbon, President and Program Manager respectively, of the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), Prof. Marcelino Mendoza, Director of the Campus Safety & Mobility Office (CSMO) of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), and Dr. Rogelio Espiritu, Director of the Office of Extension & Community Outreach (OECO) of the University of the East (UE), as well as experts and officials from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology & Seismology (PHIVOLCS)-DOST and the Office of Civil Defense-National Capital Region (OCD-NCR).

The highlight of the event is the introduction of the concept establishing Campus Emergency Response Teams (CERT) as a way of mitigating the risks associated with the “Big One” earthquake.  The Entrepreneurs School of Asia (ESA) has already begun establishing their core group and will provide a simple demonstration of their skills during the event.  The Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (QCDRRMO) will likewise showcase their state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and know-how in conducting search and rescue operations.
