Super Mario Bros. 3, considered to be one of the greatest NES titles of all time, just broke the world record for being the most expensive video game ever sold, after it was auctioned off through Heritage Auctions for a whopping USD156,000 (approximately PHP 7.5 million)!
Now, you must be wondering: what made this particular game so special that someone would be willing to shell out that high of an amount just to get it? It turns out that this Super Mario Bros. 3ย is actually a super rare copy on account of its cover art.
โWhile the condition of the game is remarkable, what makes this copy even more singular is the layout of the packaging itself: Exceedingly rare are sealed copies with the word โBros.โ formatted to the left, covering one of Marioโs signature white gloves,โ Heritage Auctions said in a statement. โCollectors have spent years looking for such a version โ the earliest in the Super Mario Bros. 3 production history โ and usually come up empty-handed.โ

This isn’t the first time that Heritage Auctions auctioned off this title. It was back in July when they sold another unopened copy of Super Mario Bros. 3, but with the less rare cover format. It fetched USD 38,400 (approximately PHP 1.8 Million).
We also found out that this title, which was launched back in 1990 in the United States, only reportedly sold for USD49.99 (approximately PHP 2,400). So if you’re looking to earn a huge fortune in the far future, better hold onto your video games! Who knows, you could be holding what would eventually become a rare commodity.
