I remember when I first finished school and my mom asked me what aspect of the Fashion Industry I wanted to be in and I clearly said “Designer with Local Textiles”. My love for our Heritage Locations also stemmed during my highschool days and we were asked to write a thesis; I made mine on Heritage Conservation.

As a fashion designer, the hunt for fabrics and materials is closely related to hunting for animals in the forest / jungle; you hunt for what you need to “wear”; and you always want to find the best materials. Because of this hunger for discovery and sourcing new materials, it has led me to discover all the different handwoven textiles that were being made around the country. From Ilocos, to Aklan, Palawan, and Mindanao. With the growth of mass commercialism and consumerism, the fabrics which were made by hand can slowly be categorized as “Endangered Species”; thankfully there are people who are becoming more concerned, aware and slowly reviving these textiles in different ways.

The same goes for our heritage destinations and locations; buildings, landscapes, architectural spots & areas – corporations are buying, destroying, re-building; when in fact these are the very reasons people take photos of during travels, trips and vacations. In other countries, these are the places & views that people save up for to visit and see.

With my love for fashion, textile & heritage & in celebration of National Heritage Month; I would like to bring the two together by showcasing the fabrics in modern fashion and locations side by side, hopefully making people aware of what we have and what might just be (if we continue patronizing our own).

*ENDANGERED SPECIES – This was a concept and angle I used during my presentation at the 4th ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium in Vietnam last March 2013; I was the Speaker Representative for the Philippine Delegation and there shared an overview of the status of our handwoven textiles together with possible solutions and options of where and how it can be alive in the modern world.
