Titled “Aya to Majo” (“Aya and The Witch”), the upcoming feature film will be based on the novel “Earwig and the Witch” written by Diana Wynne Jones, who also penned the novel that beloved film “Howl’s Moving Castle” was based on.

The story follows an orphan girl named Aya who is adopted by a witch one day and comes home to a spooky house filled with mystery and magic. It will be directed by Miyazaki’s son, Goro Miyazaki, and produced by Toshio Suzuki.

In a statement, Suzuki expressed his apprehension over premiering a film in this “New Normal” world. “I thought that a number of times while watching the rushes,” he said. “Then I realized that one stand-out feature of the film is Aya’s cleverness. And if you are clever, you can survive in any period of history. Thinking that, I felt relieved.”

“Aya to Majo” is scheduled for release on NHK this winter 2020. It’s also going to be Studio Ghibli’s first 3D3G animated film.

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for new announcements about the movie in the coming months.
