Studio Ghibli anime Mimi wo Sumaseba (Whisper of the Heart) to get live-action sequel

whisper of the heart 1

Studio Ghibli’s theatrical anime Mimi wo Sumaseba (Whisper of the Heart) provided an ending that tied everything together but left a lot of things unresolved. Towards the end, the main character Shizuku and the guy she’s fallen in love with, Seiji, watch the sunrise together. That scene showed that romance has developed over the course of the film, Seiji says he wants to marry Shizuku, and she accepts.

However, during that time, it was impossible for the two to get married because they were both 14-year-olds. Hence, a sequel is a welcome thought. It can provide a view if the two really stayed together and got married when they were older.

The sequel is turning into a reality but instead of an animated movie, we’ll be getting a live-action film. The upcoming sequel is said to be set 10 years after that ending. In that time, Shizuku has given up on her dream of becoming an author and is instead working as an editor for a children’s literature publisher. On the other hand, Seiji is still living overseas as he pursues his ambition of becoming a professional violin maker. With the distance between them, romance somewhat fades, which Shizuku tries to recapture.

Nana Seino will play Shizuku and Tori Matsuzaka will play Seiji.

Aoi Hiiragi wrote the original manga in 1989 and Hayao Miyazaki created the screenplay for Studio Ghibli. Yuichiro Hirakawa will be the director of the sequel. Production will start in February. The sequel is scheduled for release in Japan on September 18. Information regarding international release isn’t available yet.
