Stages Sessions, the concert production arm of the STAGES talent management agency, presents contemporary folk singer Bullet Dumas in a special one-night-only concert entitled “Usisa” at the Music Museum on October 5.
Bullet explains, “‘Usisa’ means to search thoroughly for the truth for meaning, which is technically the story of my music. I wander and wonder about the many things which interest me.” The singer-songwriter, known for his songs “Ninuno” and “Tugtog” (among others), traces his professional career to the year 2010 when he caught the attention of music icons Ryan Cayabyab, Trina Belamide and Joey Ayala at the Elements National Music Camp. He is also part of a trio with Johnoy Danao and Ebe Dancel which had a sold-out concert at Kia Theater last June.
Bullet’s new solo concert is a tribute of sorts to his family, friends and supporters. “Well, everyone I’ve crossed paths with,” says Bullet. “This is also a ‘thank you’ to them.”
“The concert title is also the title of one of Bullet’s latest songs which is about Sisa, a major female character in Jose Rizal’s famous novel, “Noli Me Tangere.” In the novel, Sisa is a poor woman who is longing for her sons, Crispin and Basilio. “She is Rizal’s ode to our motherland tattered to shame and misery just because she loved too much,” says Bullet.
As such, “Usisa” promises to be patriotic and romantic. Expect Bullet to croon in his signature raw and earthy style. The singer has prepared a repertoire of what he describes as all original songs. “And maybe a weird cover or two!” he adds.
Collaborating with Bullet are guitarist John Apura, keyboardist Jesper Mercado, percussionist Jacques Duffort, drummer Mark Villaba and bassist Yuna Reguerra. Bullet is the musical director of his own concert.
Preparing for the show, performing regularly at gigs and creating new material can be exhausting for artists; luckily Bullet finds time to relax by playing Ultimate Frisbee. He plays the sport and coaches, too. He has gone on several trips for Ultimate Frisbee competitions. He says, “I’m lucky that music and Ultimate Frisbee gives me opportunities to travel as often. In everything you do, you have to pace yourself so that burnout doesn’t happen…”
