It’s a terrible day for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans: the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is swinging out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a disagreement between Marvel Studios and Sony, which owns the rights to the superhero.
According to a story by Deadline, Disney (the parent company of Marvel Studios) wanted to share future Spider-Man movies in a 50/50 cofinancing arrangement. This would also mean that Disney and Sony will be sharing profits. In its current deal, Marvel and Disney get 5% of gross box-office revenue.
Sony declined the offer, which led to Disney pulling out Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios as producers of upcoming titles and removing the hero from the MCU lineup.
Tom Holland has portrayed Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Far From Home, which was released June of this year, is Sony’s highest-grossing film worldwide of all time, with $1.1 billion (roughly P57.4 billion).
Under Holland’s contract with Sony, he still has two films for the role.
There is still hope, though. BuzzFeed News has confirmed that Disney and Sony are negotiating details to see how Spider-Man could still remain part of the MCU.
