Chili Con Carne (P200)

(Spicy stew cooked with beef, beans, spices and tomatoes, sprinkled with cheese and sour cream on top)

Served in a special tortilla shell that they make from scratch; this dish is a big feed for hungry souls. It tastes like the ingredients were equally distributed to make up total deliciousness.

Soft Tacos (P200)

(Beef, red cabbage slaw, onion and tomatoes plated in soft tortillas and sour cream sauce)

I’ve never tasted soft tacos before, but I must say, they were a great new discovery for me. The tenderness of the steak is a highlight to appreciate. It also comes in shrimp and chicken servings. I will definitely order this again when I go back!

Hard Shell Tacos (P180)

Taco shell filled with all quality ingredients, plus really yummy cheese! The tortilla taco shell is tasty enough to flatter the hefty amount of stuffing. At P180, you can already enjoy a pair of tacos to fill you up.

Their version comes in three levels of hotness: sweet & spicy, mild and hot; all served with sour cream sauce. I personally prefer the former, but I endorse the hot variant’s certain kick, especially to spicy food lovers.

The Fillers

Unlike the rest of the world, Mexicans tend to have a penchant for extreme spice when it comes to food. Spanglish’s competitive edge is the distinct taste of its food. Their aim is to introduce Mexican cuisine at its finest, but with a twist that’s at par with the Filipinos’ level of tolerance for spice.

Wet Burrito (P260-P300)

(Flour tortilla folded with a mixture of commonly beef, chicken or steak; cheese and beans drenched in enchilada sauce)

What would a Mexican food trip be without Burritos? Dry Burritos are the most common form of this, but a must-try is Spanglish’s Wet Burrito. This is a recommended dish if you want a punch of something new. It comes in steak, shredded beef, chicken and shrimp flavors. One thing that makes their Wet Burritos distinct from others is the special horseradish sauce inside it, which adds kick to the dish.

Quesadilla (P210-P300)

(Flour tortilla filled with succulent steak and spinach served with tortilla chips and dip as side dish)

Believed to be one of the Filipinos’ most loved Mexican dishes, Quesadillas are even served in non-Mexican restaurants in the country. Most often than not, I encounter pork and chicken Quesadillas, but Spanglish’s Steak Quesadilla brought to me a glorious consumption. I give this a rating of 5 out of 5.

Fajita (P240-P300)

(Chicken fajitas with green and red bell peppers and onions with sour cream sauce and cheese)

Three variants of Fajitas that they serve are steak, chicken and shrimp. We had a taste of the chicken Fajita, one of my personal favorites among everything that was served. It was fun eating this because you get to make your own serving by wrapping the ingredients in flour tortilla and dipping them into the rich sour cream sauce.

Chili Dog (P220)

(Hotdog smothered with chili con carne and cheese in a generously big bun)

If you’re a meat lover and would want to try both a hotdog sandwich and chili con carne at once, this one’s for you to try.  It is served in a large bun, so it will be good for sharing. The mild spiciness also brings about an enjoyable twist.

The Afters

Aside from the hearty fillers, Spanglish Restaurant Pampanga is also home to go-to desserts that would surely suffice for your sweet tooth. Truth be told, I could forget cakes and chocolates for their desserts so divine.

Deep Fried Ice Cream (P200)

Must try! This special dessert is something you don’t see anywhere oftentimes. Its hot, crunchy coat that has a sugary feel grabs the attention of the cold ice cream and as you take a bite, you’re seemingly experiencing what heaven is. With three flavors available– vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, it will give you the right amount of sweetness you are looking for.

Triple Thick Milkshakes (P200-P220)

These ones really go by the name, and there’s nothing more heavenly than the Speculoos Cookie Butter Milkshake, which is composed of their secret ingredients and likely immersed with the famous sandwich spread Speculoos. It’s by far the best milkshake I’ve tasted in my lifetime – no joke!

The Verdict

With all the enticing recipes, it’s a surprise to find out that these were all products of hobby and sheer talent. The chef had no formal training in culinary, yet he was able to develop all original recipes in a short span of 6 months, with the help of research and a right dose of inspiration. In addition to that, his experience in Mexican cuisine in Seattle, Washington for almost a decade was enough reason why he was able to inculcate such splendid touch to his own food, which makes it worthy for Filipinos to try.

What’s more to boast about is their unprecedented customer service, which instantly impressed me. The team only proved two things as their topmost priorities- the quality of the food they serve and customer satisfaction.
