Sophie Kinsella, the author behind the best-selling Shopaholic book series, has passed away. She was 55.

On December 10, the family announced the heartbreaking news in an Instagram post.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy,” the statement read.
Madeleine Sophie Wickham, known by her pen name Sophie Kinsella, was diagnosed with brain cancer. On her website, she revealed that she was receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy for glioblastoma, which is an aggressive form of brain cancer.
“We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed – to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received,” it added.
“She will be missed so much our hearts are breaking,” the statement concluded.
Sophie is a best-selling English author who has sold over 50 million copies of her books in more than 60 countries. She rose to prominence with her first novel in the Shopaholic series, Confessions of a Shopaholic.
In 2024, she published the novel What Does It Feel Like?, a poignant and life-affirming account of her cancer journey, told through the story of a novelist facing a devastating diagnosis. Written after her surgery, the book quickly became another best-selling hit.
