If you have a Netflix premium account, you probably feel like the overlord who merely gives permission to your family members to stream movies at your expense.
Although the premium account has a limited number of devices that can stream simultaneously — four devices to be exact — sharing of the password is virtually unlimited. Therefore, you can lend your password to a family member, even if you don’t live in the same house. Actually, you can even lend it to a family member who lives in another country.
But soon, this might come to an end as Netflix has revealed plans to crack down on users who share a password.
Netflix chief product officer Greg Peters said that the company hopes to address password sharing without “alienating a certain portion of [its] user base.” “We continue to monitor it so we’re looking at the situation. We’ll see those consumer-friendly ways to push on the edges of that,” he said.
Netflix did not reveal how they plan to do this.
However, the report from the Daily Dot said that Netflix might look to limit IP addresses, which could become a problem for families who live apart.
The repercussions were also not revealed but if this is implemented, the service can choose how to deal with the culprits – whether it’s by making them upgrade to a premium service, or shutting down their account altogether.
