While Gionee did arrive a little late to the Philippine cell phone market party, this certainly hasn’t stopped the company from making some serious waves with consumers. Things seem to be going swimmingly for the brand and to celebrate the launch of their latest flagship device, the ELIFE S5.1, select members of the media were invited to join company bosses and brand ambassador Ellen Adarna for a cruise around Manila bay. Hop aboard and let us tell you all about it!
Not your usual venue: Gionee launched its latest device onboard a yacht
Most product launches these days take place in malls or hotel conference rooms, but the unveiling of Gionee’s latest flagship smartphone went a different way and instead saw a handful of media representatives invited on-board a yacht for an evening cruise along Manila bay. There, in between DJing DJs, waiting waiters, and a celebrity endorser making a James Bond style entrance, the ultra slim and brand new ELIFE S5.1 found its way into the hands of the media for the first time.
Rather slim: The ELIFE S5.1 is amazingly thin but still feels solid
The ELIFE S5.1 is a beautifully slim phone that weighs in at just 100 grams and its 720×1280 pixels, 4.8 inch Super AMOLED display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Gionee once again managed to fit some decent firepower into the super slim frame of their flagship device, and the S5.1 is rocking a 1.7GHz Octa-core Cortex A-7 chipset that should have no problems in letting you get the most out of the installed Android 4.4 OS.
Making an entrance: brand ambassador Ellen Adarna arrived by speed boat
On the camera front, an 8.0 megapixel main camera with auto focus and LED flash, as well as a 5.0 megapixel front camera with a selfie-friendly 88 degree wide angle lens should ensure decent results whatever the task, while the 2050mAh battery helps in giving you enough juice to post your pictures for the world to see.

Trying the device on the night, I was once again pleasantly surprised by the quality feel of Gionee’s flagship phone (having previously tried the ELIFE S5.5). While the phone is super light and super slim (a mere 5.15 millimeters thin to be exact), it doesn’t feel flimsy, a point possibly down to the magnesium-alloy body of the device. Gionee does put considerable efforts into research and development, and this certainly pays off where the quality of the phones is concerned. Smooth edges and corners surround the well sized screen, giving the device a solid feel.
The calm sea in Manila Bay provided a fitting backdrop for the launch event, as it has been pretty smooth sailing for the brand so far. No product launch is complete without the appearance of a celebrity endorser, though, and Gionee is no different on this front. The brand ambassador of choice is of course Ellen Adarna, who made a decidedly action movie style entrance by using a speedboat and hopping aboard halfway through the trip, before happily posing with the company’s latest device and answering media questions.
Selfie time: Ellen Adarna tries out the new ELIFE S5.1
Gionee has by now carved out its own little niche in the hotly contested Philippine smartphone market, and it looks like we will be hearing a lot more from the company in the future. The new ELIFE S5.1 is a slim and stylish phone that easily keeps up with current consumer demands on the performance front, while coming in at a reasonably low price point of PHP 12,499. It’s certainly worth a closer look if you’re in the market for a new device and want to maximize the bang-for-your-buck ratio of your purchase.
