The Louvre is renowned as the home of one of the world’s most rich and extensive art collections. Walking its halls to admire the remarkable artworks on display is one thing—but to participate in an art show at the iconic venue is an entirely surreal experience. This rare opportunity is one most artists only dream of, yet it became a dream come true for Rachel Ngan Dueñas.
From October 18-20, 2024, she was among the select Filipino artists chosen to showcase their work at the “Carrousel du Louvre” in Paris, an esteemed art event featuring 5,000 artworks from around the world. This international debut marked a significant milestone in her artistic journey, highlighting her rapid rise in the art world since starting her career in May 2023.
Leaving an Impression on the Global Stage
Rachel captivated the international audience with her distinct tropical impressionism style, featuring pieces inspired by the rich flora and fauna of the Philippines. Her choice of using watercolor, which was mistaken for acrylic due to its rich vibrancy and depth, drew particular admiration. One artist praised her blend of colors, noting their perfect balance and resemblance to the color ratio of the old Masters.
One standout piece, a watercolor on black canvas, left many guests captivated. She revealed that the message behind it evoked painting in a state of blindness, which her audience compared to the French lace crafted by blind Belgian nuns.
Throughout the show, her art prompted meaningful exchanges with viewers, with some mentioning that she had a gift for “capturing emotions that are difficult to express.” Visitors from Washington even returned on two separate occasions to further immerse themselves in her art, and one Japanese guest used Google Translate to converse with her, saying:
“I feel spirituality in your work.” – Japanese Spectator
Representing the Philippines at the Louvre
A great deal of preparation went on behind the scenes leading up to the show, with Rachel drawing strength from the support of her family and friends.
“I had some pre-show jitters being on a global stage, but when it was opening time, it felt like you were wearing your dreams. All you could do is enjoy everything because your dream felt bigger than your fear.” – Rachel Ngan Dueñas
A day before the event, she also had the chance to reconnect with Philippine Ambassador Junever Mahilum-West, the very person who opened this door of opportunity for her. The Ambassador’s words left a deep impression:
“To be an artist is indeed a noble profession because it holds so much truth and emotion.” – Junever Mahilum-West, Philippine Ambassador
Rachel was curious why the Ambassador took an interest in such a young artist. With a warm smile, the Ambassador simply replied, “Perhaps it was our fate. I will see you tomorrow at the Louvre.”
The Beginning of a Promising Career
The entire experience marked the beginning of a promising career for Rachel, who captured the hearts of the international audience. With her art displayed alongside works by artists from around the world, she brought the Philippines into the spotlight, promoting Filipino creativity that rivals international standards.
“My dream was to exhibit abroad and my first international opportunity just happened to be at the Louvre. I think to put on your shoulder the responsibility of representing your country is a tough pressure to carry. I was simply myself in the show, and I think the audience was surprised to see someone from the Philippines. I believe that there is always space for Filipino talent on a global stage.” – Rachel Ngan Dueñas
Looking Ahead
Rachel’s journey continues, with upcoming exhibitions that further solidify her place in the art world. She will hold her final show of the year in collaboration with Edya 1929 and Moda Interni at their showroom in Quezon City on November 28, 2024.
