RV Mitra for Huawei P9

My number 1 consideration in buying a smartphone is this: does it have a nice camera? I’m addicted to taking pictures! I love taking photos in daylight, at night, when I travel, pictures of my pets, pictures with my friends, pictures for Instagram, pictures and videos for Snapchat, behind the scenes of my work – just about everything.

The irony is that as a professional photographer, I don’t want to be lugging my DSLR and various lenses when I travel. That may sound crazy at first but hear me out. I love my DSLRs for work. But DSLRs are heavy, and mounting lenses make them heavier. In my personal travels, I do not want to be spending a lot of time thinking about what lens to use. I don’t want to be walking around the shores of Guam with 2 kilos of equipment on my shoulders. I just want to shoot, capture the moment with something that fits right in my pocket, and more importantly – I want the ability to share my photos/videos instantly on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. This is why I want a great cameraphone! But the question is: is there such a thing as a cameraphone that can capture stunning images?

I think I may have found what I have been looking for with the Huawei P9. First of all, it’s got TWO freakin’ Leica lenses. One for color, and the other for monochrome. And it’s camera is engineered by Leica. Come on. Need I say more?

Just like DSLRs, I love the idea that I can control ISO and shutter speed. The +/- EV function finally enables me shoot against the light (we all hate the fact that smartphones virtually cannot shoot subjects that are backlight or against the light). And this is the best part for photographers, it shoots in RAW and JPEG.

How good is the Huawei P9’s camera? Well, I am surprised that most images don’t need to be edited. I can share my photos instantly. I am also quite impressed with its dynamic range. Usually, when you want to focus on a subject that is against a white or bright background, that would make the subject underexposed. But this is a camera that actually thinks. If I take a selfie with a white airplane in the background, this camera knows my face needs to be brightened. Most cameras just don’t work this way – until now.

Personally, having owned a P9 for 5 weeks already, I have enjoyed this marvelous phone and its features. A 3gb RAM, 32gb Internal storage, Quad-core Android with a freakin’ f/2.2 LEICA lens (front camera is 8MP f/2.4). I equipped mine with a 64gb micro SD card, and I’m good to go. Can’t wait to take more shots in my next trip.
