Rapunzel! Let down your hair! Cara Barredo as Rapunzel
Repertory Philippines’ Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale takes us to an enchanting adventure in a land filled with a fireless but fearless dragon, a brave and handsome knight, an evil, queen-wannabe aunt, a flamboyant hair stylist, and of course, the lost princess with her long, long, long golden hair. Directed by the founder and artistic director of Repertory Theater for Young Audiences, Joy Virata, the play puts a quirky and magical twist to the classic tale we all grew up to.

Based on the book, music, and lyrics by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, this retelling of Rapunzel’s story added the characters of Socrates the dragon, Edgar the hairstylist, and the gypsy woman to the tangled tale.

The story opens with Princess Rapunzel trapped in the deep, dark, dank, dismal, dreary forest by her aunt, Lady Zaza who wants to steal the throne and become the queen. But then comes the handsome knight, Sir Roderick in search of his destiny; alongside his best friend and hair stylist, Edgar, in search of the perfect head of hair. Together, they find their way to the forest and into Rapunzel’s tower. With the help of the gypsy woman who’s a liiiitle bit crazy and Socrates the old and witty dragon, Sir Roderick and Edgar rescue the princess.

Inspired by the works of painter, Henri Matisse, the stage sets the enchanting fairy-tale of Rapunzel. Add to that the colorful and elaborate costumes of every character, the play is a picture of a perfect tale filled with magic, music, and happily ever afters.
