Pretty Woman is Going to be Turned into a Musical!

In this age of remakes, sequels, and adaptations, a new player is joining the group: the hit 1990 film Pretty Woman is going to be turned into a musical!

Pretty Woman stars Julia Roberts as Vivian, an escort hired by Richard Gere as Edward, a businessman, to be his companion for a week. The Cinderella-inspired film became an instant classic, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 1990.

Taking on Roberts’ iconic role is Annaleigh Ashford, a Tony Award-winning actress who has played Glinda in Wicked, Margot in Legally Blonde: The Musical, Lauren in Kinky Boots, Essie in You Can’t Take it With You, and Dot/Marie in Sunday in the Park with George. She was awarded the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2015 for You Can’t Take it With You.

The musical will be directed by Jerry Mitchell (who also directed Kinky Boots and Legally Blonde: The Musical), with a book by Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall and screenwriter J.F. Lawton, and a score by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance.

There are 23 songs in the score, and are a mix of rock songs and ballads.

Pretty Woman the musical is expected to hit theaters in 2018 or 2019.
