PINKDESTRIAN LANE: Visitors and shoppers cross the PINKdestrian lanes, Araneta Center’s pedestrian lanes which were painted pink in commemoration of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Araneta Center goes pink this October to raise awareness about breast cancer and show support to patients and survivors. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Araneta Center paints its pedestrian lanes pink to encourage the millions of visitors and shoppers to learn more about the disease, its prevention, and treatment.
In the Philippines, breast cancer is considered the number 1 type of cancer among women and 20 women die of breast cancer every day, according to the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS). Just this 2018, the Global Cancer Observatory recorded a total of 24,798 of new cases afflicted with breast cancer. This accounts for 17.6% of all new cases for all ages in both sexes and 31.4% of new cases among women this year.
In this light, Araneta Center presents its breast cancer awareness event title “Beauty and Bravery: Empowering Women Against Breast Cancer.” Happening on October 14 (Sunday) at the Gateway Mall activity area, “Beauty and Bravery” will feature inspirational and self-care talks. Dr. Claire Soliman, president of Philippine Society of Medical Oncologist, will talk about breast cancer, its causes, prevention, and treatment, while breast cancer survivor Gertrudes Calderon will share her story battling breast cancer. Meanwhile, Kundalani Yoga teacher Tet Bachmann will discuss techniques on managing daily stress and resisting illness.
Aside from the talks, the Philippine Cancer Society will offer free clinical breast exam. In support of the awareness campaign, attendees can have their hair colored with washable pink dye for free at the event.
