Phil played for the national team for 13 years and became the Azkal’s top goalscorer with a record of 52 goals and most appearances made with 108 matches. He also served as captain of the team for three years.

He is also the only Filipino footballer included in the list of international players who have scored more than 50 international goals, joining the ranks of globally-followed players Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar. He earned his 50th international goal in his team’s match against Tajikistan in March 2018—a penalty kick that led them to victory and secured a slot for the Philippines in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
