Here’s Why PewDiePie Is Taking A Break From YouTube In 2020

Swedish vlogger Felix Kjellberg, better known as PewDiePie, recently announced a hiatus from YouTube. With over 100 million subscribers, he is one of the platform’s largest stars. He has been known as a controversial figure due to some remarks which have been seen as racist.

In light of this, PewDiePie decided to take a break from YouTube in 2020. “I am taking [a] break from YouTube next year,” he explained. “I wanted to say it in advance because I made up my mind. I’m tired. I’m feeling very tired. I don’t know if you can tell … early next year I’ll be away for a little while. I’ll explain that later but I wanted to give a heads up.”

PewDiePie then went on to talk about YouTube’s new harassment policy which disallows content that “maliciously insults” others based on protected traits such as race, gender expression, and sexual orientation. Unsurprisingly, the Youtuber inherently disagrees with this policy. This is one more reason he had to step away from YouTube in the meantime.

“The thing I’ve learned about YouTube’s policies is that it doesn’t matter what they say, what matters is how they enforce it,” he said. “YouTube creators are degenerates, they’re the worst people out there, speaking from a YouTuber.”

“The only thing keeping these YouTube vultures in check is other YouTubers … Don’t come and ruin it for us YouTube,” he said. “The rule is if you do dumb [stuff] on YouTube, you will get called out on it.”

This is not the first time PewDiePie has taken a personal break from the platform. It has actually happened twice over the 9 years that he has spent on YouTube, with the first break having happened in 2016. At the time, he uploaded a video entitled “I QUIT (for now) [END]” and explained that creating content was causing too much stress and sadness.
