Pedialympics 2019: Celebrating All Abilities, Altogether

Empowering persons with disabilities (PWD) and promoting inclusive wellness is a constant yet hopeful fight. Each day, we inch closer to a world where every person, regardless of ability, is celebrated and empowered. The Alliance in Wellness and Sports of Students of the Allied Medical Professions (AWSAMS), an organization from UP Manila College of Allied Medical Professions, continues that fight.

Among its goals are promoting inclusive wellness and holistic development to students and PWDs alike. To achieve this, it presents Pedialympics, a mini-Olympics event for children with disabilities.

On its third installment, Pedialympics is now more innovative. Simultaneous individual sports events will be transformed into adaptive physical activities, allowing children of varying capabilities to participate. Teams will also be formed this year, creating an avenue for teamwork, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.

Patients from Smile Train Philippines together with the Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy clients from the Philippine General Hospital ACCESS Hub shall be participating.

These children—from crawlers, to assisted-ambulatory, to those with advanced gross motor skills—will come together, guided by clinical supervisors and student-volunteers from UP Manila.

Pedialympics aims to unite these people towards inclusivity and to raise awareness for PWD participation.

The success of this event will be proof that all people, if given the chance, are capable of participating and contributing to the society.

All are invited to be spectators in the event. Sponsors and partner organizations are encouraged as well. Pedialympics will be on March 30, 2019, from 9am to 12nn at the Student Wellness Center in UP Manila.
