In a social media post, the animal welfare organization emphasized the misconception that pet-friendly establishments only cater to small or specific breeds.
“As pet ownership continues to grow in the Philippines, businesses have become eager to attract the pet parent market by branding themselves as ‘pet friendly.’ However, the misconception that ‘pet friendly’ only applies to small or specific breed dogs and cats is both discriminatory and limiting,” they noted.
“This creates a narrative that Aspinsโwho will never meet that size requirement or breed preferenceโare unworthy of being in these shared spaces and will never be the companion of choice.”
PAWS then reiterated that true pet-friendliness means valuing all pets, regardless of their size or breed, stating, “Itโs high time we challenge these narrow views and embrace a true definition of pet friendlinessโone that values pets regardless of size or breed.”
The organization said the certified pet-friendly seal will set a “gold standard for what it means to be truly pet friendly.”
“Our comprehensive guidelines ensure pet parents can confidently choose restaurants, hotels, and businesses that welcome their beloved pets, without the worry of being turned away based on size or breed,” they added.
PAWS explained that the guidelines will also help business establishments to fully welcome responsible pet owners while “maintaining a safe, enjoyable environment for all by adhering to health and safety protocols and regulations.”
“Together, we can create inclusive spaces for all, while ensuring that every pet dog or catโlarge or small, purebred or notโgets the love and respect they deserve,” they concluded.
PAWS is now accepting recommendations on pet-friendly establishments to evaluate. You can submit your suggestions through their contact form here.
