South Korean thriller film Parasite has just made Golden Globes history. It won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign-language Film on Sunday, making it the first Korean movie to do so.
The movie, which is directed by Bong Joon-ho and co-written with Han Jin Won, is a genre-bending story of a poor South Korean clan that manipulates their way into the employ of a rich family. It was nominated for three awards at the 77th Golden Globes, including best screenplay and best director.
“Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films,” Bong said, accepting the Globe with the help of his translator, Sharon Choi. “Just being nominated along with fellow amazing international filmmakers was a huge honor. I think we use only one language: the cinema.”
Parasite stars longtime Bong collaborator Song Kang Ho (“Memories of Murder,” “The Host,” “Snowpiercer”), Chang Hyae Jin, Choi Woo Shik and Park So Dam as the struggling Kim family and Lee Sun Kyun and Cho Yeo Jeong as the wealthy Parks.
Parasite had its world premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2019, where it became the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or, and the first film to do so with a unanimous vote since 2013’s Blue Is the Warmest Colour. It was selected as the South Korean entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, Bong’s second selection after 2009’s Mother.
