From facing supposed tax evasion claims from Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares herself, the People’s Champ is now the number one taxpayer in the country, according to a report by Yahoo! News.
Pacquiao, who is currently preparing for his much-anticipated fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., supposedly has 163.84 million pesos in taxes paid, which is 64 percent higher than the second highest taxpayer, according to government records.
The report also said that BIR Chief Kim Henares confirmed that Pacquiao is indeed the top taxpayer, but added that his pending tax evasion case still stands, where he allegedly owes about 2.
2 billion pesos in taxes from 2008 and 2009.
However, Pacquiao also stressed that he was able to pay his taxes in the United States in 2008 and 2009, and that he does not need to pay taxes in the Philippines, due to an agreement between the two countries that avoids double taxation among their citizens, the report said.
The BIR on the other hand, insists that Pacquiao’s documents proving that he settled his taxes in the US are insufficient, and that he still owes the Philippine government taxes, which has a higher taxation rate, according to the report.
