5. Why are canned drinks not allowed in some cinemas?

8 - Soda Float

I tried searching for reasons why canned drinks are not allowed in cinemas and it led me to reports of bombings in Mindanao from improvised explosives were hidden in canned soft drinks. So, I guess that’s why some cinemas here in the city don’t allow these drinks inside the theaters too. But if they can really be used to conceal improvised explosives, then they should be banned in every public place as well, not just the movie theaters, right?

Or does the cinema play an important role in this?

4. Why do PUVs and motorcycles think they own the road?

Jeepney Travel Philippines

If you drive in the city, you have probably observed that PUVs and motorcycles seem to own the road. PUVs stop when they want, whenever they want, even without using turn lights. Even if you’re on the right lane, they swerve and force their way in whenever they want to just to get ahead, again, without using turn lights. Motorcycles stitch their way through traffic even if it’s dangerous and some even make U-turns between gaps on slots along highways that are blocked with barriers.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I rarely see a PUV or motorcycle get apprehended for violating traffic rules, with the exception of being part of road accidents or riding in tandem for motorcycles.

3. Why does it seem like tricycles aren’t regulated, and like #4, also own the road?

Our Ride - Long line of tricycles

In the city and even in the provinces, it looks like tricycles aren’t regulated properly. It seems that the number of tricycles keep on getting bigger, which can be a cause of traffic especially in narrow streets in the city where they are permitted to operate. Also, more often than not, it seems like they aren’t even maintained properly. Still, they are operated even if you aren’t sure if the break is working properly or if it is working at all.

Furthermore, do the drivers even have licenses, because the way they drive says otherwise? Moreover, in my observation, some drivers appear way too young to have a license.

I just hope they enforce safety in this mode of transportation.

2. Why is mobile phone use discouraged in banks?

Just a few months back, I was inside a bank and I observed this notice. Although it doesn’t say that use of mobile phone is not allowed, it somewhat discourages it.

If I remember correctly, a few years back, use of mobile phones was strictly not allowed inside the bank. I even experienced getting called out by a security guard when I checked my phone while I was in line. I was just checking some payment details then.

Here is a good read that explains why the use of mobile phones inside the bank is a constitutional right.

Lifted from the said article is this explanation on why mobile phone use inside the bank is discouraged and why the reason behind seems illogical.

I surmise that banks are preventing the use of mobile phones to prevent bank robberies. That logic is as stretchy as Mister Fantastic’s arms. We can’t use the “ends justifies the means” sense to defend this. It is actually the reverse in law.

To prevent crime, one CANNOT suppress Constitutional Rights. That is what martial law is for. Has there been any link of mobile phone use to bank robberies? If we use that reason, then we should ban knifes in restaurants because they can be used for harm. We should ban barbeque grills because the matches used to start the charcoal can cause fires. What controls our society is “the means justifies the end.”

1. Why is there a “Bawal ang mabaho” ordinance?

Weird Policies - Marikina Ordinance(Photo from Eris Zeus Boquiron)

Marikina City Ordinance No.116 Series of 2001 #1 states, “Bawal ang mabaho.” (Rough translation: Being smelly/stinky is prohibit.)

How do they even quantify being stinky to penalize those who violate this ordinance?

I believe there is a deeper reason that I cannot fathom so I hope someone out there help me understand.

Please explain.

For any or all of these questions, I hope those who know the answers impart knowledge.

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
