Just after the Guinness World Records recognized Miyako Chiyo as the oldest person alive and oldest female alive, she passed away last Sunday at the age of 117, according to Japan’s Health Ministry.

Chiyo was born on May 2, 1901, in Wakayama in the Kansai region of Japan. She was 117 years 81 days when she died.

In a statement released by Guinness World Records, Chiyo’s family described her as a patient, kind and chatty “goddess” who brought joy to those around her.

Additionally, she enjoyed eating Japanese foods including sushi and eel. She also loved practicing calligraphy.

Guinness World Records has three longevity categories. These are the oldest person living (male), the oldest person living (female), and the oldest person living.

At present, the fellow Japanese Masazo Nonaka holds the title as the oldest person living (male).
He just turned 113 last July 25. On the other hand, the oldest person and oldest female titles are yet to be confirmed after Chiyo’s passing.

The oldest person ever is by Jeanne Louise Calment from France who lived to the age of 122 from 1875-1997.
